About Me:

SUMMER SOLSTICE NEWSFLASH!

On June 21st, 2008, my novel, The Adventures of Mercury Lane: Bad Commandments will be available to read, review and order at:  www.theadventuresofmercurylane.com.

The book will also be available at Amazon.com,
Barnes&Noble and bookstores everywhere.

This is the first of a 10-book series for young adult, post-Harry Potter readers. Each episode is a fast, 200-page read.

As Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn illuminated the evils of slavery in 19th century America while telling the story of Huck Finn's adventures on the Mississippi, Jack “Mercury” Lane's modern-day teenage adventures illuminate the evils of militarism in 21st century America.  It's rousing, entertaining adventure, with a core message that militarism threatens to bankrupt our nation and destroy our republic. We must learn to wage peace, not war, in oder to raise enlightenment and plant the seeds of democracy in people's minds.  You don't fight terrorism by terrorizing innocent people, even with the best of intentions.

$5 of every website sale goes to Dreams for Kids, a wonderful children's charity based in Chicago.  The website launches on the 21st of June 2008: www.badcommandments.com.  You can also go to Author's Den to read a synopsis:

Now let me tell you about the Dreambirds.  It's an airshow team dedicated to peace, with a mission of supporting Dreams for Kids and global children's charities. The guys I fly with say it's important to establish my credibility, so below is a list of some aviation career milestones. Please forgive the seeming lack of humility.  The truth is, I've failed in life more than I've succeeded, but I keep taking my best shots.  As the great NHL hockey player Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you never take.”  I firmly believe that we all have unique abilities and gifts. Everyone's contribution matters.  The least among us may have the most important gift. You can change the world, so take your best shot and honor God's gifts to you!

I attended the Air Force Academy and then served with distinction for ten years active military duty.  As a captain slated to be promoted ahead of my peers, I gave up a promising career when I came to believe (based on my observations overseas) that contemporary U.S. foreign policy and military action were increasingly at odds with our best interests.  Our military is comprised of true patriots, but our government policies put them in harms way on false pretenses.  To paraphrase William Butler Yeats, “Those who we guard we do not love, those who we fight we do not hate.”

In the words of Dwight Eisenhower:

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron.”

As the war in Iraq demonstrates, our use of military power often reflects poorly on the American people and brings more harm than good to the world.  We have lost respect as a nation, but I know the citizens of the world still respect and admire us as a people.  American goodwill remains a beacon of hope to a world in need.  Today, with the Dreambirds, I fly for peace, in service to the children of the world.  The Dreambirds fly in support of Dreams for Kids, whose mission statement reads:

“Our mission is to empower young people of all abilities through dynamic leadership programs and life-changing activities that inspire them to fearlessly pursue their dreams and compassionately change the world.”
